How do I redirect an URL of a deleted page in Drupal 6?

I try to add a redirect for an old path say /events/pool-party to /events/pool and it just takes me to a 404 page. If I try to add an alias it says I have the wrong URL or don't have access. I have administrator access. Accidentally created a broken link in our newsletter. Thanks.
